Andrew Salgado is perhaps one of Canada’s most promising young artists of today, renowned for his bold, large scale figurative paintings he has gained quite the reputation as ‘one to watch’ from critics on both sides of the pond. His latest Exhibit, simply called TEN takes place at The Canada Gallery at the Canadian High Commission in Trafalgar Square and will showcase a modest selection of his work from the last 10 years.
Salgado’s career started in 2005 at the University of British Columbia where he received his Bachelors degree. He has since completed his Masters at Chelsea College of Art and has exhibited work world wide, from South Africa, to Korea and more recently hosted exhibition, The Snake at Beers London Gallery which marked his 11th consecutive sold out show.
Curated by David Liss of the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Toronto, the exhibition coincidently falls around the same time as the publication of Andrew’s first monograph, also entitled TEN. In 300, beautifully vibrant full colour pages, Salgado cover’s his artistic career over the past 10 years incorporating his writings and an introduction from exhibition curator Liss himself and close up, studio shots. It’s almost impossible to define Salgado’s style, constantly switching from figuration to abstraction with an obsessive compulsion for bold, heavy mark making, his energetic, erratic approach gives life to his paintings. Incorporating mixed media into his work he once again challenges categorisations and in his latest work has even began experimenting with hand stitching linen and canvas.
